Useful Windows Tips Tweaks

Next time you need to launch more than one program from your Programs menu (Start/All Programs), hold down your SHIFT key while you click the program’s icon. The application will launch, but you won’t lose the Programs menu and have to start all over.
———————————————————– ————————
Do you ever wonder how many files are in a folder? Right-click the folder and choose “Properties” (or Alt+double left-click).
Look down where it says “Contains” to find out how many files and folders are in it.
————————————————————- ———————-
Need to shut down two or three open programs quickly, but leave the rest running? Hold down the CTRL key as you click their buttons on the taskbar. Then, right-click (still holding down the CTRL key) one of those depressed buttons and select Close from the resulting menu.
Note that you can also minimize, maximize, restore, cascade, or tile these windows using this technique. Cool huh?
Have you ever needed to launch multiple programs? Normally, you hit the Start button, Programs, then select the program you want to run. Once that one starts, you go back through and repeat the process for the next program. Well, here’s a better way.

Are you having trouble when you try to highlight text? Put your cursor at the point where you want to start highlighting (selecting) the text.
Then hold down your SHIFT key and use your up / down arrows. You’ll find when you hold down an arrow that the text scrolls (and highlights) by at a much more manageable rate.

Windows Tricks

Are you having trouble when you try to highlight text? Put your cursor at the point where you want to start highlighting (selecting) the text.

Next hold down your SHIFT key and use your up / down arrows. You’ll find when you hold down an arrow that the text scrolls (and highlights) by at a much more manageable rate.

Have you ever tried to shut your computer down, only to have it hang on the shut down screen? Or maybe it’s locked up beyond any CTRL-ALT-DEL help. You may find that hitting the power button doesn’t seem to do anything.

If you really need to force a shutdown via the power switch, press it in and hold for 6 seconds. That should turn the computer off.

———————————————————— ———————–

Need to get to your system properties? Well, you *could* click the Start button, Settings, Control Panel, then open the System icon.

Want a faster way?

Hold down the ALT key and double click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

——————————————————– —————————

Here’s a cool trick for the scroll wheel mouse users out there… if you are in a web browser (Explorer, Firefox, Netscape) or reading an email in Outlook Express, hold down your Ctrl key and spin the wheel. It makes the text larger or smaller depending on which way you spin. For users of the Opera browser, it magnifies both the images and the text.

———————————————————– ————————

Do you ever need to make your Favorites side bar disappear or appear? With Internet Explorer and Fire fox just type Ctrl+B. With Netscape Ctrl+B opens the Bookmark Manager.

———————————————————– ————————

To get a new browser window in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Netscape just type Ctrl+N.

For a new tab in FireFox or Netscape type Ctrl+T.

——————————————————— ————————–

When you print digital photos do the colors look different than what you saw on the monitor? Not way off, but just a little (and you have enough ink)? If you print a lot of pictures then what you can do is print out a picture, let the ink dry over night, then adjust your screen to match. By synchronizing your settings you should get what you see on the screen.

————————————————————— ——————–

Every time you visit a web site, your browser stores the site address (and all the pages visited on that site) in a history file. This comes in real handy when you’re trying to remember the cool site you were visiting the other day, or if you wanna check up on what sites were visited by your kids.

In both Netscape and Internet Explorer you can hit CTRL+H to view history.

——————————————————– —————————

If you go to a site that should have updated content but it seems like it didn’t change, that could be due to a cached version coming up. To make sure that you are getting the most recent version of a page, hold down the Ctrl key and click the Refresh button in your browser.

——————————————————– —————————

Ever go to a site for information that you need, but the animations and stupid music are so annoying. Wait till the page loads, then hit the “Stop” button on your browser. All the insanity on the page should cease, making your visit more bearable.

Want to stop your computer from connecting to the internet without your permission?

With Internet Explorer go to Tools / Internet Options, then under the “Connections” tab select “Never Dial a Connection”. Now when trying to dial out you will be prompted before it happens.

How To Make FIREFOX browser run at full speed

To get rid of the annoying Unresponsive Script error dialog and fix the behavior of script that takes long execution time in Firefox, we can longer the waiting time for script to run before Firefox intercept it with warning.
1.Run Firefox.
2. In the Firefox address bar, type about:config, and then press Enter.
3. Scroll and locate or search with Filter text box for dom.max_script_run_time.
4. Double click on the line of dom.max_script_run_time, and change the value to a higher number (in seconds) that you want Firefox to wait before getting the Unresponsive Script warning.
Be default, the value is 5 or 10 seconds. You can safely set the magical number to let’s say 20. You can set the value to 0 to instruct Firefox to wait foever – no warning and dialog whatsoever.
Note that the whole Firefox may be not responsive and cannot be used while waiting for scripts to execute, so the number should not set too high in order to give you an opportunity to stop truly nasty or buggy scripts and recover use of Firefox.
5. Click OK.
6. Restart Firefox.

Here I show you a way that can do it in less than 1 minutes!

mheight = InputBox(“Height (Default=540):”)
If mleft = “” Then mleft = 0
If mtop = “” Then mtop = 0
If mwidth = “” Then mwidth = 720
If mheight = “” Then mheight = 540
n = 1
With dlgOpen
If .Show = -1 Then
For Each vrtSelectedItem In .SelectedItems

How to: Disable unwanted programs at startup

You probably need only half the programs that have been set to be loaded at startup. Having too many programs drastically slows down your startup. It’s very easy to specify which ones you want to start automatically. It’s wise to leave all the anti virus and system tools.

Here’s what you need to do:
Go to Run from the Start menu
Open “msconfig” (without the quotes!) and click OK
In the windows that opens, choose the Startup tab
Make your choices by unchecking the programs you don’t need to load at startup
Hit OK and restart your PC.
After starting a box appears. Check the option that the dialog box won’t display at restart.

That’s all!

How to: Change text size in browser

Tap Ctrl and + to make text larger or Ctrl and – to make text smaller

How to speed up your internet connection

By default, most systems have some bandwidth reserved for nothing. You can change this the following way: (Note: this only works in Windows XP Professional)
Open gpedit.msc from the run box in the start menu.
Navigate to: Local Computer Policy > Computer configuration > Administrative templates > Network > QoS Packet Scheduler
Open Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Check the enabled box and change the Bandwidth Limit to 0%.

Depending on your system, this might need a restart to start working.

How to: Make your desktop icons transparent

It’s up to you to decide which way you like them, but I personally find the default icons that have the awful blue drop shadow very annoying, as it looks like they are all selected.

To remove the drop shadow:

1. Go to: Start > Control panel > Performance and Maintenance > Adjust Visual Effects

2. Uncheck the box for use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop which is right near the bottom.

How to: Remove the Recycle Bin

This is a good idea if you want to save both desktop and hard drive space.

To remove the Recycle bin from your desktop, go to Start > Run and type gpedit.msc

Go to User Configuration > Administrative templates > Desktop > Remove Recycle bin icon from desktop

Enable it and reboot or type gpupdate.exe into the run box to apply changes.

If you want to completely remove the Recycle Bin, go to Start > Run and type regedit.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket/C and open NukeOnDelete. Change the value to “1″ and reboot.

How to: Make your XP start up a lot faster

There is a Startup Delay value in the Registry Editor that, when decreased, will make your XP start up faster.

To to this go to Start > Run and type regedit to open up the Registry Editor.

Navigate to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex and look for an entry named StartupDelay. Change the default value of 4800000 to 40000 and reboot for the changes to take effect.

How to: Create your own shortcuts

You probably know most of XP’s useful shortcuts, but did you know that you can make your own to programs? To do this, right click the shortcut icon of a program (in the desktop or preferably in the start menu) and click Properties.

Select the Shortcut tab and click the Shortcut box. Type Ctrl + Alt + W (In this example, were making a shortcut to Word). You can only make Ctrl + Alt shortcuts, by the way. Press ok and you’re done!

It’s better to make shortcuts to Start Menu entries, as they are less likely to get deleted.

The “Hibernate” function on Windows XP

The hibernate function on Windows XP is basically the same as stand by, but with one difference. The files and programs you have open will temporarily be saved onto a specific location on the hard drive, instead of RAM.

This means that the computer can be switched off while hibernating and it will consume no power. When you turn your Windows XP on again, everything will open instantly, just like after a standby. No startup screens and waste of time.

Anyway, to hibernate, go to the shutdown menu as usual: Start -> Turn Off Computer and hold down the shift key to relpace “stand by” with “hibernate”, It’s as easy as that.

How To: Display The Shutdown Menu When Your Computer’s Power Button Is Pressed

By default, your Windows XP will shut down when the Power button is pressed. It’s a good idea to change it so that the shutdown menu is opened instead, especially if you have little kids running around the house.

It’s quite easy to change it:
Step 1:

Go to your Windows XP’s desktop and right-click it. Select “Properties” and the Display Properties window will appear.

Open the “Screen Saver” tab and look for the “Power” button near the bottom of the window. Click it.

Step 2:

In the “Power Options Properties” window that opens, go to the “Advanced” tab.

There is a dialog box in the “Power Buttons” section. Choose what you want Windows to do when the power button is pressed.

“Ask me what to do” will make it open up the shutdown menu.

Step 3:

Click “OK” and restart your computer. From now on, pressing the power button will open the shutdown menu, letting you decide what you want to do.

A Faster Way To Shut Down And Log Off Your Windows XP

If you’re experiencing slow shutdowns and log offs on your Windows XP, this trick will help you.

Instead of accessing the shutdown menu via Start->Turn Off Computer, open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Press “Shut Down” at the top of the Task Manager and choose what you want your Windows XP to do:
Stand By
Hibernate
Turn Off
Restart
Log off
Switch User

The task will be performed in a matter of seconds.

How To Bypass The Recycle Bin When Deleting Files

If you are absolutely sure you want to delete a file, why send it to the Recycle Bin? Windows lets you bypass it really easily.

To delete a file or a group of files, select them with and when they are highlighted, press Shift+Delete. Press “Yes” in the confirmation box that opens and you’re done!
